Evaluation

Question 1
In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

Frame 1-4 (setting/location) - Here the main character of the music video is introduced to the audience to the audience. To make sure that the audience gathers the information that the character at the start is poor and homeless we used a variety of locations such as bin waste locations and back street alleys of which the character lives in. The characters homeless locations can be viewed in frames 1-4.

Frame 2-4 & 7-8 (costume) - As you can see clearly in Frame 2 the state of which the characters clothes are in. We choose this costume as it helps to the audience to understand that the character is in fact. With various ripped torn and unseasonal clothing alongside the setting and location of which the character lives works together to help the audience understand the characters current situation. The characters costume consists from frames 1-4 but however changes in frames 7-8. This is because now the character is no longer living homeless and in fact has became rather wealthy due to his music career. To help show this we used costume such as designer jackets to assist in showing that.

Frames 1-8 (story) - Frames 1-8 show how the story of the music video developing. One of the main frames that show story development are frames 3-5. Frame 3-5 helps to show the story of the whole music video, this is because frame 3-5 show how the character becomes famous. As you can see in frame 3 and 4 there is another character who decides to record the homeless male singing and upload it to the internet. This is shown as you can see in frame 3 there is a young male character recording the main character, you then see in frame 4 the point of view from the young male character recording. After the video has been uploaded to the internet frame 5 displays the comments and feedback the video got and how the homeless character went from rags to riches.

Frame 9 (titles/graphics) - Throughout the whole music video only one title is seen, which is displayed in frame 9. Frame 9 is a quote that we decided to put into the music video as it matched one of the conventions of our influential music video Ghetto Gospel by Tupac. We felt a quote is a good convention to incorporate into the music video as it raises awareness for the current homeless situation and gets people thinking. Also the fact that the quote is by the artist of music video it becomes more powerful.

Frames 1-8 (camera work) Throughout the music video various different camera work is displayed as you can see in frames 1,2,3,4,6,7 and 8. Frame 8 shows how we used camera work to help the audience understand the story, this is because we used a low angle shot which tells the audience that the character is now powerful. That is a prime example of how we used camera work to help tell the story of the music video.

Frames 4,5 and 9 (editing) - All though editing was used throughout all the frames above the main frames that i want to focus on in terms of editing are frames 4,5 and 9 Frame 4 was created using a green screen editing technique. To do this I downloaded a green screen video of a camera recording from the internet. I then edited this to go alongside the original clip which resulted in the two working together to create a camera recording effect in the video. Frame 5 shows some of the editing in the music video. With frame 5 I used my editing software Sony Vegas Pro 13 to blur the background of the screen out to allow the audience to focus on the YouTube comment. In Frame 9 I used the text tool within my editing software to display the quote on screen.

Frames 1-9 (music) - The frames do not show music as that cannot be displayed as an image. However the music worked alongside the music video to tell and develop the story in the audiences head.

Frame 1,6 and 7 (setting/locations) - These frames show the setting and location of which the music video takes place. Frame 1 tells us that the location is in a big city as we see lots of skyscrapers. Frames 6 and 7 then tells the audience that the location is set in a ghetto of the city, this works along with the song title. We gather this as in many of the frames we see ghetto like environments.  We tried to use conventions in the same way by selecting the homeless characters environment and setting as poor like what is shown in frame 9.

Frames 2,4 and 9 (costume) - Within frames 2,4 and 9 we see various costumes. The costumes selected in frames 2 and 4 are ghetto gangster like costumes. The group of men are dressed in a similar sense in baggy jeans and gold chains, this was probably selected to aid the setting and give the audience a clear sense of that the video is based in a ghetto. Frame 9 shows a homeless women wearing clothes that give off the sense that she's poor which works together with the props (a shopping trolley and items in black bags) that she is in fact homeless and based in a ghetto. We tried to follow similar conventions by creating costumes such as when the character was homeless to suit his surroundings and location. We also took inspiration from the dress sense of the males in the ghetto when the character became famous.

Frames 1-9 (story) - All the frames shown above contribute towards the story of the music video. The story is shown right at the start in frame 3 of a male dead on the floor with multiple people standing around him and a women crying. From then on the story develops and tells the story of how the male came to his death. We tried to use similar conventions by displaying a clear story throughout with no lip syncing just a clear story and no performance.

Frames 4-5 (titles and graphics) - Titles and graphics were not harshly used within this music video and only appeared on occasions. Titles were used and can be seen in frame 4 which displays the time to help the audience follow time sequence events. Titles were used in frame 5 which displays a quote, we followed this convention by adding a similar quote at the end but about the homeless situation around the world.

Frames 1-8 (camera work) - Camera work can be seen throughout the whole of the music video, using shots to help portray and display the story. Frames 1 and 2 use establishing shots to help the audience understand the location in which the story is set in. Frame 5 used a low angle shot to show the people displayed in the frame had power, we followed this convention by incorporating it into our music video to show the main character had power.

Frames 4 and 6 (editing) - Editing took place throughout all the frames such as cutting and splitting the clip, however the main focal points of editing in the frames are frames are 4 and 6. Frame 6 has used a blur technique a conventions that we tried to replicate in our music video when the YouTube comments were displayed. Also editing was used in frame 4 to display the quote on screen and convention which we again tried to replicate in our music video are the end.

Frame 1-9 (music) The frames do not show music as that cannot be displayed as an image. However the music worked alongside the music video to tell and develop the story in the audiences head.
