Planning - location shots

Location

The vast majority of shooting will be in the capital city of London. We choose this location as it is very commercial, easy for the audience to identify and there are lots of interesting places and notorious landmarks that we can incorporate into out shots.

Key landmarks and attractions that will be included:

The London Eye

"The London Eye is a giant Ferris wheel on the South Bank of the River Thames in London. Also known as the Millennium Wheel, its official name was originally published as the British Airways London Eye, then the Merlin Entertainments London Eye, then the EDF Energy London Eye. Since mid-January 2015, it has been known in branding as the Coca-Cola London Eye, following an agreement signed in September 2014." - Wikipedia 2015. The London Eye is easily recognized by most people in Britain, it looks over all of London and can easily be shot in part of our music video.

Big Ben

"Big Ben is the nickname for the Great Bell of the clock at the north end of the Palace of Westminster in London, and often extended to refer to the clock and the clock tower. The tower is officially known as Elizabeth Tower, renamed as such to celebrate the Diamond Jubilee of Elizabeth II.The tower holds the second largest four-faced chiming clock in the world. The tower was completed in 1858 and had its 150th anniversary on 31 May 2009, during which celebratory events took place. The tower has become one of the most prominent symbols of the United Kingdom and is often in the establishing shot of films set in London." - Wikipedia 2015. Big Ben is a landmark within London that is easily recognized by most people.

Wembley Stadium

Wembley Stadium is host stadium to all sorts of entertainment and sport, but it is mainly known for it's role as the home English national football stadium. Wembley Stadium hosts England FC home matches, FA Cup, Capital One Cup, Football League play-off matches and popular entertainment such as live music, comedy and sport entertainment.

Westfield Stratford

Westfields is a major shopping center in Stratford, London. The center opened on the 13th September 2011, it is one of the largest urban shopping centers in Europe and is the third largest in the UK. The shopping center holds 280 stores and 70 restaurants. This is a good location to choose as it is recognizable by our target audience and could be a potential location for a date.

Skills development/progress - Research into editing

Editing skills progress

This video taught me a lot about colour correction and effects that can be used while editing

This video taught me a lot about how to add the flicker effect into the final cut, this effect is commonly used within music videos

Pitch feedback

Feedback - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=flxm98MN_OA

Highlight Questions

  • How are you going to make it look professional?
  • Will there be any performance?
  • How will we see the conflict?
  • Is their anything you have seen that has influenced you in terms of conflict?
  • How are you going to make it come across as professional and serious instead of comedic?
  • What editing techniques will you be using?
  • Have you thought about the camera shots you will be using?
  • How are you going to show the social media aspect to the music video?
  • Is your product going to have a message to it?
The feedback we gathered will allow us to improve our idea, here is what we are going to do to act upon the feedback we received from our class. Based on the feedback we gathered through audience testing we have made some changes to our idea and incorporated some ideas into our product. For example Micheal suggested that instead of displaying a computer screen to show the social media aspect of the music video we will overlay the actual footage itself and show an on screen text graphic of the messages. The initial fighting conflict idea we had based on audience feedback is going to be problematic if we don't adjust our idea for this scene, so because of this we are not actually going to see the full blown fight we will see fast paced POV shots to show the conflict to our audience. We have now also looked at a few camera shots we will be using which was asked at the time of feedback and have now decided what shots we want to use, for example a wide shot at the start will be used.

Planning - initial ideas

Chris Brown- Ayo
We were going to pick this song for our Music Video but we decided not to do this song as we felt it did not convey the message that we wanted to show and it would be impossible to fit around our story. This song is more a song about getting a lot of girls and then having sex with them and then after that they then just dump them. We felt that our story would not connect with the song as our story is about bullying so we thought that the conventions of the song and the conventions of our story would not work.

Labrinth- Earthquake
This was one of our choices because the song has a very good beat to it but also it does not really have much meaning so you would be able to mold the song into any convention you would want it to portray, for us we felt that this was the song’s biggest weakness as we wanted a song that already has conventions that match those of our chosen story and because of this we decided to not use this song.

Chris Brown- Loyal

We used this song as one of our ideas because we felt that it had a good message to it which was girls are never loyal to guys who do not have money and will always  move on to people with money but because we didn’t want to use that story and there was no other way of changing the songs meaning we decided to drop this song as it is a song that people really like and we felt if we did it in our own way it would always be compared to the original so we decided to not use the song.

Jay Z ft Kanye West- Ni**as in Paris

We decided to use this song as an idea because of its appeal and how it could connect to our story but there take of the story is more about Racism which has no correlation with our song now and because of this we decided to leave this song because even though we could mold it to fit our story the song is so big we figured that it would not work as people would still compare the song to its original meaning.

Empire Cast - No Apologies

We feel this would be a good song choice as the current version doesn't have a good music video to it. It seems like a pretty low budget production and isn't really like other music videos as it is just them performing it. We feel if we chose this as our song choice we could make a better music video as we currently don't have great competition at the moment.

Research into audience - Focus group feedback on influential films

Empire- No Apologies

  • All performance no story
  • Hard to visualise meaning.
  • Change the main idea of the pitch.
  • The rapper was privileged in the video he received most of the shots and shots cut between both of them.
  • Shot one from one side the whole time.
  • Wasn’t much cameras work involved?
  • Meant to be in the club as the lights were dark and the club lights but there was no shots of the audience.
  • Rapper wearing a lot big gold chains.
  • All in the same location.
  • Do your own representation of the song.
  • Easier to do something different

2pac- Ghetto Gospel

  • Focus more on the storyline no performance
  • No lip syncing
  • Circular narrative because it starts with the ending and ends with the same ending
  • Textual graphics on screen
  • Felt like a TV drama at the start
  • You felt close to the action
  • Wasn’t a flashy video
  • Shows the ghetto culture lack of jobs and money
  • Showed a lot of run down areas
  • Shootings and gangs
  • Parents stereotypically follow straight and narrow. Son with a lot of temptation around him mum trying to keep him away from that.
  • Accidental death just caught in the crossfire
  • Showing dangers of your environment and being aware of your videos
  • The camera was always close and hand-held and it made it quite real and documentary-like.
  • Deep meaning song.
  • Strong memorable video.
